Question: Best substrate?

I am looking at small newts ( firebellies are my preference) so I was wondering what the best substrate for them is

i read that no substrate in the water part is best for fire bellies since it's easier to keep clean.

I know what.substrates for planted tanks I worry about substrates specifically for these newts
