Whats the best substrate for newts?
Is sand okay? or is small gravel better?
Id like to put live plants in the tank aswell....

OK first, no sand.

aquarium gravel works, make sure it is not too small or one dumb newt may try to eat it.
live plants: java moss is good. But hard to find.
I don't know what plants are actually perfect, but they require light, and the need good substrate. However they can but moldy or gross if they die.

Also, what kind of filtration are we talking about?

My tank doesn't have a filter but i clean
all my tanks once a week .... I was planing
on putting Anarchis (plant) in my tank.

A filter is only 20-30 dollars american. A submergible or ungergravel filter is not 100% neccesary, hover here are some things to consider.

1. You wont have to clean the tank as often. If you buy somthing with a foam insert, you clean it mabye once every 10-12 days.

2. Newts don't like change, and cleaning gravel and removing them can cause stress.

3. Consider that the plants may not do so well, espically if you are cleaning once a week. If you have more then 3 newts and you are feeding them properly the water is not going to work unless you filter it, beacuse changing things around kicks up gross stuff, that will settle later, but needs to be removed.

5.Buy a submersable filter. I live 10 minutes from the border and will gladly bring you one.

a good plant to get hold of would be hornwort, it is good in low light and it grows quickly

Jeff, if its the Bellingham, Washington thats just south of the border with British Columbia, its going to be more than a 10 min drive

Alexander lives way on the east coast in the province of Quebec, that would be a 2 or 3 day road trip! So gas up the car, get lots of snacks and round up the friends!
