Hey everyone I am new to the world of keeping salamanders and newts although I have kept dart frogs for just about 7 years now. I was wondering if any suggestions on a salamander or newt that a beginner like me could keep, obviously i wouldnt just rush out and go buy one right away if thats what anyone is thinking i would do my 2 months of research before I would buy the animale just like i do with my darts.
Thanks for the help!

Glad you are doing the research! Do you want to stick with terrestrial setups, or are you interested in venturing into aquatic or semi-aquatic setups?

thanks, the way i look at it is that if i know all i can know by reading it would save me and the animale alot stress.. I'm more interseted in the full aquatic setups but i also like the semi-aquatics too.

I enjoy my Cynops Orientalis quite a bit. They are a fully aquatic species of newt, very active and easy to care for. If you can find a breeder or someone that sells them from local breeders and not wild caught I would suggest this species to start with.

Have a look at the caresheets for all Cynops species here. They would all be suitable but C. orientalis doesn't tolerate slightly higher temperatures as well as the others. If your house gets warm in the summer, it is something to consider because cooling a tank is difficult and expensive.
As Kim mentioned already, try to avoid buying wild caught animals (that means C. orientalis from a pet shop, really).
