sorry can't help but love your castle/towers! :D

By memory banana lilys are planted with roots on there side, dam in trying to remember, is that the farthest you can plant it in? your banana lily has a stiff root, or centre root(s), right? if so i seggest planting it sideways, yeh judging by your roots definatly side ways, but so the stem of the plant faces up, get me?

u plant the roots "white things" so the bananas are on the side or pointy bits of the bananas are pointing upwards u can put up to a third of the bananas in the substrate but no more...

I love that castle!

Thats how, i remember reading it some where ages ago but when i needed the info my brain cashed, lol.

they have some white things that i guess are roots. Is this better? they dont really plant nicely any way up so the leaves are pointing upwards.
Thanks for the castle compliments

Yep, thats the way! The lillies look great. The green leafy things will either sit facing upwards or sit on the substrate/sand.

Tank looks great by the way (and yes, im with Rheann - lovin the castle)!!

I think it's pretty sad, all the banana lilly plants I find here in shops all look really bad. The ones that you, Rob, and Chyrl have look amazing.

Wish I really could say the same about the ones here

Dead?? These things are pretty hardy (so ive noticed).
How did that happen?

all the plants in my tank have died (i also have elodea). First they started to go transparent and now the elodea is brown and the banana lilly lying on the substrate. The bananas still look ok tho. They are planted in sand, and are in high natural light without being in full sun. The tank is still cycling.

Banana lillies requiire medium to high light. If you have a tank lid they will die as no sun gets on the top of the tank. Seeing as the elodea is dead as well i think that there isn't enough light in the tank at all.

it just has a glass lid- nothing solid. I am looking into a light but cannot afford to get one yet.

My elodea survives with little light, and what I think are banana lilies seem to be growing (slowly) from what are very small clumps of root.

Possibly something to do with the cycling? and are you using anything to fertilize them?

i havnt fertilised them yet because i wasnt sure if that would have an impact on cycling.

Are there any animals in there???

Only because I know that the elodea flourished with my goldfish, due to the waste I'd guess. Hence why I asked about the fertiliser.

as skylar said u need med to high light for banana plants, i have really noticed a difference since i added my 3rd fluro tube and started fertilizing and added C02. 1 tube probably wont be enough ether
it might survive but wont thrive...
have a bit of a look around here Cheryl

No animals in there. I am still trying to cycle the wretched thing. I have officially failed cycling 101. My 2nd ammonia spike is starting to drop and i still have absolutely no nitrites. Once the ammonia is down to 0 again im just going to get an axolotl. The tank has been running for ages and ages now (5-6wks. I would have to look at the calendar to know for sure).
An aquarium has a sale on double lights for $100. If the sale is still on in a week or so I will get one.

NO LIGHT and your wondering why your plants are dieing. I dont understand why people get newley grown banalilys. If the banana lily does not have at least one single leave floating on the top (its attached by like a 50cm stem) then it wont get all the light it needs. DOnt forget, the intensity of the uv rays dispert as they pass through anything, air, glass and water. The worst is glass.

When you get the light make sure its above 30w each and has a kelvin rating of above 10-15000 for each bulb.

Dont forget that ammonia burs plants as well as axolotls, but not as bad. They're both alive.
