I decided to post some pictures of Baby Chinese Fire Bellied Newts. I hope these thrill someone into home grown baby newts. I started with a fake plant in a 20 gallon tank with water 1/2 filled in the tank. I have a reptile root and some Roman columns sticking out of the water. Since my newts are over a year old they never get out of the water. They always swim around and hang out on the leaves under water. I noticed that the plastic plant had some leaves curled under with eggs inside. I then waited about a week and purchased the same exact plant and remove the one with the eggs to a different tank. I have six baby newts now plus around 20 eggs. As soon as I replaced the first plant the mother newt laid another 10 to 15 eggs. I never see them fertilize the eggs but I watched her lay the eggs.
The next picture shows the curled leaf.
Now the big brother is showing the little one around the tank. I have fed them pretty well on Brine shrimp and I hope they won't eat each other.
Lastly, this little fellow is just waiting for his legs to come along.
I hope your Fire Bellied Newts are giving you as much fun as mine. It's amazing to see them in the development phase although the cost of keeping these guys alive is getting higher and higher. I've tried asking some pet stores to take them once they are larger, but they pretty much frown on me. Hopefully I can find some good homes for them.
If you would like to see more pictures of the setup or have any questions please post back.
