Baby Hong Kong newts

Hi there,

We are first-time newt owners, with two Kong Kong firebellied newts we've had for about a year and a half. We were very surprised to discover eggs all over our tank. We separated about 20 of them, and to our shock, they are starting to hatch! After reading up on what they eat, I have tried to get hold of blackworms on the net, but I can't find anyone who ships to Canada (Montreal, Quebec to be exact). Our adult newts eat earthworms and small nightcrawlers. Has anyone tried the commercial newt food (dried worms)? Our adults won't eat unless it's live - are the larvae the same? Help! We really want our babies to live!

Try www.canadianfeeders.com They sell whiteworm cultures, fruitflies and other small food items. If the larvae are big enough you could try moving frozen bloodworms around with a stick, or paperclip (I use a chewed up q-tip).

Sorry, when I said whiteworms I mean microworms. Also, you might try the local aquarium society - they should be able to tell you where to get tiny live food items for aquatic animals.

yes-they will need live food-older larvae sometimes will eat pellets or dried-but new guys need very small live food-best bet is to learn(fast) how to hatch out baby brine shrimp (it takes 3 days but your guys should still have their yolk for a few days post hatching), you may also look for a supplier in canada that has daphnia available. as a risky quick fix you can get some pond water from a local unpolluted source -it will have food but may also have pathogens and possibly preditory insects in it.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
