Baby Axie Tank Set-up

This is the first tank that my axies lived in when they came home. It is a 10g, with a few flat rocks, otherwise it was a bare bottom set-up. They were provided with plants, and a faux tree stump for their hiding comforts. They hid little, as they were always begging for food. They were fed thawed, frozen bloodworms, and pellets, which were put in the leaf shaped feeding dish. Since tripling their size, they now reside in a 20g tank (pics of which I will post later).

The white one has turned golden. The wild type has acquired a dusting of gold specks.

Golden albino is "Blanco" (how original!). The wild type is "Calisto".

Cute little axolotls. In the feeding dish and ready for action! Just how I like to see them.

Nice set up. I love that fake root thing with the bamboo coming out of it.

Nice set up. Is that real bamboo, looks like it. Can you post pictures of your axies now. I would like to see your golden because it looks a lot like mine does now. How long did it take for him to really become "gold." Mine seems to be getting golder everyday.

Argh I want some of that bamboo too! Saw a pic a while a go with a big long stem in a tank.
Over here it's called lucky bamboo. The nursery I work at has it ocassionally. And I've seen it in the asian grocery stores at the shops. Unfortunately it's always outrageously expensive.
Anyway, back to the point, I love the fake tree root with the bamboo out the top! And your golden axie is gorgeous! Blanco looks almost a peachy color in that photo.

this type of bamboo comes from the dracaena family. it's a very hardy plant and well known to be desease free, and it works great with most tank set ups! My husbands uncle brought me home a huge bundle he got from a Hmong market I believe that's what it was, and it was only $10 and I got so much, concidering they sell so little at expensive prices most other places. Unfortunatly, my cat likes to chew on it lol, but it survived and is healthy as ever! I've had it for a long time now. The cut stalks never grow, and are usually sealed with some sort of wax, but the leaves will grow and grow and grow. that's a very nice set up! I like the fat root as well, they have some at pets mart, maybe in the future I'll see about getting one

I saw a custom made tank over the internet that had a huge tree root stump thing inside it, this tank was so huge! Not sure how big, and it was right in front of a stair case, probably in someones home. i will see if I can find the link, a tank like that would be soo cool for axies!

Dang Rheann that is one super cool looking tank! I wish I have one too!!

Me too grant! I love it! love it! love it! I know my axies would be ever so happy in a tank like that

I think the tree stump is fake, that they made it but I am not sure lol. Looks great!

Hi everyone!

Rheann that tank is BEAUTIFUL! That setup is not for me, as I am not a WEALTHY person. I bet those folks also have an aquarium service take care of the tank.

The bamboo "lucky bamboo", I get at a store here in WA called SIX STAR (when they have it). They charge anywhere from 1.50 to 3.50 a stalk, depending on size. Anywhere else it costs a fortune (because it is a fad thing).

The faux stump I purchased at PETSMART. I got a deal on it because it has some damage.

BTW, I LOVE your drawings Rheann!

Hi pamela! I really like that tank, though i'm not wealthy either lol, though I wish I could get a tank like that! They probibly do have an aquarium service come in and clean it, as it looks like it would be hard to clean its so big lol but so beautiful! I would love to get a little stump for my axies. I saw some at pets mart, but I didn't check out the prices, as I'm not quite ready to change my set up yet, I love my pcv rock cave I made lol. Thanks for the comment about my drawing! I drew the dragon in window's paint and got really bored so added it to my profile. I have about 18 stalks of lucky bamboo, and it all came bunched together and I got it for $10. I wish my cat hadn't nibbled it though lol but it still looks nice. The way you have your tank set up, it almost makes the stump look likes it really part of the bamboo, like its just growing there

Thanks so much also for the advise about the Otocinclus too

hey guys, just wondering if it would be alright to stick the bamboo in the tank as it is? thanks

Hey Stefan, yep, it's ok to stick it in the tank the way it is. I had it like that a long time ago.

It does just fine

Wow, your tank is beautiful! I really love the little yellow leaf dish...I could swear I saw one like that at a home-decorating store once; I never even thought of using stuff like that. That's a great idea

I had some "Lucky Bamboo" (Dracaena sanderiana) in my Taricha tank a couple of years ago - it lasted for three years *completely* submerged, before it finally rotted and I threw it out (they really do need thier tops in the air, hehe). They're really cool plants.

Nice setup Pamela. im sure your babies are very happy in there

Nice healthy axies
