Axy swimming vertically at the top

Hi guys, I just wanted to check with you about our new adult axy. She's not eating much and at times she starts to swim vertically at the top of the tank with her head slightly above the water. I've checked the water and all is good - no ammonia/nitrates etc and pH is fine. We live in Melbourne and I think the heat may have something to do with it? What do you think? Our baby axies are doing fine in the same tank (240L). Thanks

she is probably just settling in Sevare. Can you tell what temperature she is in and how long has tank been set up for?

Hi Mikki,
Temp is at 23*C. We put in frozen bottles of water but it's only gone down a fraction

The tank has been set up for about 7 months.

ok you know your tank is too warm and she will be stressed. If you can try and place a desk fan somewhere to blow over the surface of the tank. This will make a much bigger contribution to the cooling effect.

Thanks Mikki, I'll try that now and keep you posted.
Just curious, why would our adult be stressed and our 4 month old babies ok?

I doubt that they are ... all axies like temps fairly cool (16-18C seems ideal to me, 20C is ok). I would guess your juveniles are suffering somewhat too.

Perhaps the volume vs surface area factor has some impact I really couldn't say for certain. Anyone else here think that smaller axies are better equiped/able to deal with a raised temp. Can't say I subscribe to that notion. Be interesting to see if others have an opinion or experience to suggest it.

Well, I put a fan on the tank overnight and now the temp is at 17*C! wOOt! Thanks for your help Mikki

With the tank at the lower temp our little babies are swimming all over the place and look very happy

BUT....our poor adult Bella doesn't look happy. She seems to be having trouble getting to the top of the tank...she swims vertically at the bottom now as if she's trying to get up. Any ideas?

PS: We have put Bella in the small hospital tank so she can get to the surface easily.
