Hello all,

I have been trying for a few months to find axolotls in my area. I live in New Jersey, and it seems that Axolotls, like turtles, can not be legally sold in the state. They are legal to own, but state law limits their sale. I have even called pet shops in New York, searched the internet, read through thread after thread, but I still can't locate a few to call my own. Does anyone have any ideas?

I posted 2 similar messages over the past few weeks, even in the for sale section. I was shocked that no one responded. Is this topic off limits? Is it impolite to inquire about buying an Axolotl. I don't want to offend anyone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't have axolotls in New Jersey without a permit. A friend of mine sold some of my axolotls to a person from New Jersey who had her axolotls confiscated. I guess if you showed up at a reptile show or pet shop in another state and purchased some you could sneak them into Jersey. I recommend you get some other salamander.

If you tricked me into selling you some at the Havre De Grace show in Md. on July 14 or the Hamburg, Pa. show on Aug 8th I'd have no way of knowing you are from New Jersey. That Fish Place/That Pet Place has them for sale. Reptile Masters in New Rochelle has them for sale. Maybe you could get them to sell some to you. If someone tells me they are from New Jersey I can't sell to them. If they don't tell and I'm not shipping to New Jersey I have no way of knowing.

Thanks Michael. My wife informed me that we'll be in South Carolina on Aug 8th, so the PA show is out. What part of Maryland is the Harve de Grace show?

By the way... My brother is in NYC, and he is looking for some Axolotls. Can you ship them to NYC?

This might sound stupid but I can't sell them to you if I know you are taking them to New Jersey.

It's amazing, only in New Jersey. Drugs and handguns can be purchased on almost any urban street corner. However, a hobbyist can't have a pet, because it looks like an animal that the state considers endangered. The bureaucrats and lawyers fail to consider the near impossibility of finding a larval, albino, Eastern Tiger Salamander in the wild.

I understand your position, and appreciate the time that you and others have taken to explain the situation. I have no ill feelings toward you or anyone else in the forum.

Thank you
