Axolotls eggs! Surprise!!

Hi there,

I've had what I thought was two boys for the past 15 months, so imagine my surprise when last night one started to lay eggs! EEK!

I don't have the set up to raise them, nor to be honest the interest to Make profit. I was thinking of removing the eggs and culling them quickly, is there a good way to do so?

This might sound daft, but vie bought a turkey baster to remove and suck them up, my logic being it must be better than my big oaf hand in the tank for a lung period.

Do I let the eggs dry out, or dispatch them in boiling water?

I know i should separate the two as well, but use read that the can Pine after lost friends and get I'll if doe so?

Any advice would be great!

I had the same problem. I sold some eggs and froze the rest to cull them. I've never heard of an axolotl pining after a removed tank mate... I'm trying to rehome my female and get another male for that very reason!!

If the eggs are attched to a plant/tank decoration, then just remove that and slide the eggs off (a messy job - took me ages last time with my big leafy plastic plant!). I found they stuck very well when they were laid and the turkey baster wasn't powerful enough to suck them up!

You can remove as many as possible and freeze them. Those eggs that you can't will likely be eaten by the parents. If you don't want to completely separate them, you could use a tank divider to prevent them from breeding.
