I finally cycled my 2 axolotls 20 gallon and they're now just about 5 inches so they can have sand. I put them on sand for the first time and the first thing they did was shove their mouths full of it. They're normally always eager to eat but now they're not eating. It's only been one day but it's worrying me. I'm thinking part of it is just maybe adjusting to the new tank? They were in a 10 gallon with daily water changes before this 20 gallon.

My axolotl did this a few times when I first got him and put him on sand, are you sure that they didn't spit it back out again? This is what mine usually did.

I wouldn't worry too much after one day, I would wait for other people to chime in though. From what i've heard axies can pass sand quite easily which is why its the best substrate to put them on, as it doesn't cause impaction. Just to check, is the sand quite fine?
