Hi guys,

I bought this little guy a week a go after not having axolotls for years. He's 15 months old from a local aquatics centre, and he has had 2 legs and what looks like his gills? Bitten off by a 1 year old axolotl. The reason I'm unsure that the gills were bitten off is because they just look shorter, where as the legs were obviously bitten off. I'm concerned that his legs and gills won't grow back, as read in several places that they can grow back but no guarantee. I'll attach some photos of him.. Can anybody tell me what's happening with his gills? And what you think of his poor little legs?

Light is on for photographic purposes.

Poor little guy, I don't know about the legs but the gills should grow back, they look like they have been nibbled on by fish too. It's good to see he has found a caring home regardless of his missing bits !

Like yourself my heart went out to a similar little guy, about a month ago. Mine has no front legs.....not even stubs like yours...which look hopeful for re growth. His gills were similar but one month on I can see a massive improvement with fine filaments now apparent....lots of clean water, good food and care and he seems content even if not perfect.....

thanks for the replies. his legs seem to be growing back slowly and maybe slightly deformed, his gills look a teeny bit longer but it's hard to tell. poor guy has had such a tough life. turns out when we bought him he was prolapsing his cloaca and it fully prolapsed a few weeks after we bought him. me and my bf fixed him ourselves and he seems fine now.. hopefully one day he will look like a normal axie with all legs and gills haha
