today one of my axolotl's went nut's while cleaning there tank it, was spinning around (like a croc when trying to eat something)
and swimming around realy fast for only 5 second's but managed to cut her self. I'm pritty sure that it was one of the bottom's of a fake plant that i had pulled out because i can see some of the skin on it, any way the cut is about 3-4cm long and about 1mm high on the fin bit on the top of the tail closest to the head end of the tail, the bit that got slised is still hanging on a bit on one end. It was trying to get it off with it's mouth but couldent get it, what should i do Please Help

i wouldnt have a clue BUT (haha) today i was doing tank change overs and Demetrious cut her tail too, looks like two big V's bout 5mm deeps and 1cm long, the end of her tails missing about 2mm too, i assume this was naughty Cizin as i didnt see any floaty skin at all and theres nothing that sharp to cut herself on... what im doing daniel is salt bathing her once a day, and if she gets a fungus ill up the baths. they heal well as long as they dont get nastys on them. oh mine went a bit mental once she was in the new tank too, maybe it hurts them or something, shes settled down now though, any one else want to help us!! haha

How weird is that and that the biggest coincidence is your axiy all right , mine is now i'v treated the tank with melafix witch is a all natural antibacterial treatment that does not effect them, it seam's to be working alright the axolotl is looking better now , so i can hope foe the best !!

yeah ive got melafix too for my fish, i read somewhere on here that its not good in high concentrations, i might put a teeny bit in, she seems fine now, happy as ever.. cya!

Melafix actually seems to do nothing at all so I have found. Salt baths are the only way to go. I have used melafix on my axies and goldfish with no luck what so ever.

Melafix is an odd substance. It is sold as a medication, but is best used as Daniel is using it, to prevent infection of cuts and scrapes. It boosts the immune system and will suppress (not kill) bacteria and fungus. I'd suggest keeping it around and using it in situations like this, but not as a treatment once your axie is already sick.

I read on the axolotl site http://www.axolotl.org/health.htmthat it safe to use it and it does not say that to use it small doses and with what im doing it seem to be working fine. The tank that the axolotl is in is a 200l tank and i'm doseing it for a 180l tank!! And one other thing the axolotl that had the cut on it tail, it gill's still seem a bit droopy thay used to stand right up but lateley there sort of droped down a little, but it eating fin the water con's are fine and the other big axolotl gill are realy good it seem's a bit weird but i don't no what's happening!!

mmmmmm Demetrious isnt eating very much, normally shes the guts of the group, and neither in Lucian the only one eating is Cizin (my lil dude) maybe Demetrious is in pain?! i hope not, even though them going off their food isnt unusual i still get a bit freaked when they wont eat haha

Cuts in the tail are quite common usually they heal quickly. Having said that Tweak cut his tail quite high up sometime ago and has retained the split. Pain doesn't seem to be a problem so unless your axies wounds are fresh then being off food may be more likely something else. But axies can go off food for no apparent reason and it passes in a few days. Keep an eye on them & good luck
