Hi all,

New to this site and to the wonderful axolotl world! We have had it about a month and we enjoy watching it. My question is we have noticed the top fin has "indents" in it. Could this be caused by rubbing the small plants we have just placed on the left & right of the tank or is this just normal. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Attached are pics of the top fin and tank. Thank you in advance!

Hello,

It looks like it has injured itself. The tank looks beautiful but you may want to check the decor for any sharp pieces or really hard plastic plants. They are a bit klutzy. It's probably why nature has made them able to grow body parts back.

Thank you Tara,

I did take out the 2 plants and bridge which were recently added. I will keep a close eye out.

Thank again,
Peter

The damage, unless really severe will probably not affect the axie You make sure he is regenerating those patches at a noticeable rate. It is not really much to be worried about in my opinion, as 9/10 of the salamanders that I find aquatic in the wild have some part of their tailfin missing..
