Hi folks

i need some real practical advice on keeping Axolotl.

1) can i keep a single Axolotl in a 1.5ftx1ftx1ft tank?
2) can i keep them between 22 degrees to 25 degrees?

thanks

1. That tank size seems a little small to me. I would get a bigger tank than that, like a 20 gallon tank.

2. 22-25 F or C? If its F that's too cold, if its C, that's too hot. 60-65 F is the best temp I think.

22-25 C is much too warm. About 21 C is the highest you should allow your tank to be, but you can help control the temperature by keeping frozen water bottles in rotation in your tank, by buying a chiller, or by using a few other methods.

See more cooling methods here.

Seeing as axies grow to around 10-12 inches that tank would not give the poor thing any room to even turn around.

And axies should be kept under 20C, 22-25 is way too warm.

Wow, I didn't even see the size thing up there. That's what I get for skimming, eh?

You need at least a 10gal long for your axolotl. 20gal longs are better.

hi guys

thanks for advice
i will drop the idea of keeping Axolotl. 20 degrees is quite hard for me to achieve.

thanks

You can set up a USB stand with a USB adapter and a USB fan for like $10 that will keep the water below 66 degrees as long as you keep your house at a reasonable temperature in the summer time. I keep my house at about 73 degrees when it's hot out and my tank is below 66 with just a little fan blowing into the water. Here are some links, the exact stuff I used. I just used some double sided mounting tape to put the usb stand against the rim of the tank. Really really simple and effective.

Can you show us a picture of that setup?

A laudable idea but not everyone keeps their tank next to their computer.

If you watch the video you'll see there are no computers anywhere remotely close to my fish tank. If you checked the links you'd see that you plug the usb stand into a wall.
Also it would work with a simple clip on fan but the usb fan was smaller and cheaper so I went with that.

I like the idea. Does the fan make much noise? Does it make much current on the water?

Also is your little guy still not eating? You might want to move him to a longer container. He might be feeling cramped, which might stress him out enough to curb his appetite. I keep my little guys in hard plastic containers at least the size of a shoebox, and that seems to work pretty well.

Nice set up!

No it'd be hard to hear it even if you were trying to haha. I don't think it makes too much current, however I do have that hang on back filter (which I plan on upgrading, well, I plan on upgrading to an entirely better tank at least 40 or 55 gallons hopefully a breeder tank.. I'll be making a few homemade filtration systems for it.) which pushes a bit of water around so it's hard to really tell if the fan is making much of a difference there. The little guy is eating now yeah, he ate a baby fish and has been eatting a few pellets a day. Doesn't have a ravenous appetite yet like the big guy in the tank. I'm getting another little guy that will be the same size as him in a few days and I'll be getting a tank for the two of them then.
Quick side question, the bigger guy was sitting right where the HOB filter's waterfall falls to for a while earlier, his gills were flowing around and he was swaying a bit, he just sat there for at least 10 minutes in it, is that normal? I know they aren't supposed to like much current but he seemed into it.

Yeah, I think the need for anything to do with USB is rather redundant - that was the point I was trying to make. The fan may be smaller and cheaper but a smaller fan will push less air and therefore not assist with evaporation as well. Thus, in turn, it will not cool the tank as much.

But it certainly cools it enough, is quiet, is small, and is cheaper. My tank is below 66 degrees, not sure exactly where it is because the cheap tape on thermometer that came with my tank only goes to 66 degrees. Most AC fans that would work for this purpose will be three times the size of my little usb fan, will be louder, and will push a lot more water around. Most importantly of course it will cost you more. But yeah, let's find a reason to complain about anything even if it isn't worth complaining about.

I keep a 4xfan on in summer. Room temperature is around 86-95. This fan will only keep it to
75 alone and I would need ice bottles to get it back down to 66-68. Seeming OP is asking to keep them in water that's 22-24 degrees cel I'm guessing the room temperature is a lot hotter than 73 Fahrenheit. So a fan alone would not help.

In regards to chilling under the HOB - yeah that's normal my one loves to do that. If it's annoying to them they wouldn't be there in the first place.

Holy cow you keep your house warm!

Australian summers :D and no air con in the house. Thankfully I have a stay at home mother who loves my axolotls (though she denies it!) who is diligent with ice bottles :)

Haha how do you live without air conditioning?! I have trouble keeping up with ice bottles.

Lived here all my life it doesn't bother me. I've got a beach down the road, ocean breeze at night and fans to help in the day :)
