I'm thinking in putting some 1 1/4 inch stones in the tank with the axolotls. Is that size big enough where they wont accidentally swallow one. What is the minimum size stones that you can put in with them?

I'd say not safe. You be amazed what an axie can fit in their mouth.

In all honesty rocks are a pain to clean around and in between. If you want a large (fist sized) rock for decoration then fine, but I found river rocks were too much trouble.

Definitely too small. The basic rule of thumb is that anything inedible you put in the axie tank must be LARGER THAN THEIR HEAD. Not their mouth. Their head. Anything smaller is in danger of being chowed down on. This could be fatal. Don't risk it.
