I have been looking at alot of planted tanks and thought i would put some work into my tank. What plants should i avoid when setting up a tank for an axolotl?

Hi Greg,

Most plants have a bit of info about their requirements printed alongside their containers. The most common thing that rules them out is temperature, and their temperature range is commonly listed; next is their lighting, usually also noted. I have found that any red plant will fail miserably; apparently that color needs lots more light than I can provide. Limits on light and temperature will give you an overseeable range of plant choices; beyond that, like Ray notes, steer away from anything with fine, feathery, or needle-like leaves or fragile stems, as axolotls are to plants what the proverbial bull is to the china shop. ;)

If you search this forum for "plants" you will find several threads listing various good options.

Greg31, I have a rhizome plant that is doing well. It is Bolbitis,a fern. It is doing well in the cool water and low light level. It is a slow grower but I have lots of new growth(placed in the tank 3-4 months ago). It has tolerated being sat on by my male axie without shredding(at least not yet) and he loves to swim through the fronds. It is attached to a piece of terra cotta pottery by some fishing line. Very minimal care. When I have some extra $ I'm going to order lots more. Java moss does well but I had difficulty with Anubias.

Aponogeton sp do very well in axolotl water conditions. These are most commonly sold(mistakenly) as Betta Bulbs.
