Hello, we have a mature axolotl (6in) & he has thrived for about a month & a half. Within the last week or so, he quit eating worms, what we normally fed every other day, about 1/2 of a worm. He hasn't pooped that we have seen, so we were told to feed him semi cooked peas and remove the shells, which we did. He also ate some beef heart too, but never went & now won't eat. We do have fine natural sand as a substrate. He is not floating, but is not swimming a lot. I've ordered a water testing kit but it won't be here until about 4 days. Any ideas besides refrigerating him to help? Thanks!

I’m not entirely sure how to really help with your axolotl, but I do have suggestions which I hope will help. Have you tried feeding him axolotl pellets? You can buy them at most fish stores. I recommend the brand BluePlanet, axolotl sinking food. Designed to suit axolotls and various catfish. If that doesn’t work, perhaps your axolotl is just stressed. Try putting in some fake plants, if you haven’t already. Having some plants in the tank will give your axolotl a sense of security. Fake plants are better for axolotls. You can use real plants but there also require a lot more work, and some plants require light to grow, which could be very stressful for your axolotl.
I’m not sure if these suggestions helped, but I hope they did. I hope your axolotl is okay 👍

How can you give such a wrong advice ?
- as plastic objects, fake plants do nothing for the welfare of the axolotl. Moreover, plastic objects often leak bad substances in the water.
- live plants contribute to epuration of the water, uptaking ammonia, nitrates and other minerals. Fast-growing plants are particularly efficient.
- there are easy plants which are very efficient and won't require hours of work : Ceratophyllum demersum, Egeria densa for example. Floating Ceratophyllum (=hornwort) create shadow zones, even if there is a strong light above the tank.
Simple ecological rules.

Oh well, sorry. I didn’t know. I got that information of John. I was just thinking of reasons why John would say that fake plants are better then real ones. Also, you didn’t have to be so rude about the way you pointed out I’m wrong. I was just trying the help.

I doubt John gave such advice, perhaps theres some missing context here?

I wasn’t lying. 😕
