I was just wondering, do axolotl gills grow back? In a local pet store complex here in the Philippines, I've noticed that most of the axolotls being sold are almost bare of their gills.

yes if they are in the right kind of environment (not with axolotls that bite their gills, they aren't stressed, the water conditions are right, etc.) they will

It also depends on genetics. While most axolotls will grow gills or limbs back, not all do. For example, I have two axolotls I got for free because they were inbred. One has been able to regenerate the nip in his tail just fine, but the other has had two stumpy front legs that have never grown back.

So generally yes they will, but there can be exceptions.
