I posted a couple of pictures of Leo a couple of months ago - but I think (s)he was too young to be sure about gender then - but as (s)he has grown quite a bit in the meantime I thought I'd post a few more pics and ask opinions on gender. So what do you think?

While I was on I am also posting a pic of Marina - my other axy. She's a bit older - they are in separate tanks at the moment - but I'm expecting to get them in a new 4ft tank in the next month or two. So I really would like to know if I've got a boy and a girl or two girls - any views welcome.

(Sorry about the poor camera work - but i'm not much cop as you can tell!)

The first pic makes the wild type look like a male, but the others are harder to tell in. In my very amituer oppinion the leucanistic looks male too, but I might be wrong. I don't even own an axolotl yet:rolleyes:

I had the same thing with the wild type. The first pic looks like a male the other pics makes me think "hmmm..... I think female".

And for the leucistic one... I'm not really good at this (even when I think it looks a bit "male-like" over "there") so I'll let others decide

umm both look male to me

Thanks for the responses so far. It is interesting to see that the concensus on Marina is that she is male! Last time I posted pictures the concensus was female - see this thread:

http://www.caudata.org/forum/f46-be...lotl-free-all/69883-what-sex-our-axolotl.html

I would really like my soon to be tank mates to be a boy and a girl (with the possibility of babies in the future ) - but they are what they are - and I would like to get to the 'bottom' of that! Any further thoughts gratefully received - and if there is any other ways of telling / photographic angles that may help you experienced guys come to a view then let me know.

Thanks.

it's very hard to tell. perhaps a birds eye view of them also would help, or maybe better detailed photos?

I have now got a few more pictures - hopfully a bit clearer than before. So any educated guesses about whether soon to be tank mates Marina and Leo (the wild type) are going to be husband and wife or just good friends?

I think Leo should be Leah. (Appears to be female).

And Marina should be Marino (Appears to be male).

Marina is most definitely Marino....but I think Leo is still Leo...Your pics of Leo are a bit fuzzy but if the bump extends to the sides as well as Marino's :)D), then I'd say Leo is a Leo.

Females can have a bump but it doesn't extend to the sides, it is only visible from the side (in my experience). Males have more of a lump if that makes sense. If you look down from above, you won't see any lump behind the legs, in a male you will.

This is based on my observations with my guys/gals...someone else may have something different to say.

On a side note..as Shannon said the pictures are fuzzy, so I just caught myself leaning in really close to the screen to try and get a good look.

I hope sitting with my face jammed against a computer monitor in order to look at amphibian's "parts" is normal.

Thanks for your thoughts - I am not good at taking pictures and couldn't find our camera today - so these were done on my phone which doesn't help - so apologies for getting you all staring at fuzzy pics of Leo(na)'s bits! I'll try to get some better ones when I move them into the same tank in a few weeks and get more views on the wild type then. From what Shannon says (about 'bump' size) I suspect they are both male - so it will be just good friends rather than man and wife - and no babies! :(

They both look male to me too. I suspect the wilds bulge will get bigger as he gets a bit older.
