I have pics but can't figure out how to fet them off of mobile phone.

I recieved an axololt from a friend who saved it from someone who took terrible care of him. His top two gills were missing and he ia scarred on either side of the head and missing the first portion of his caudal fin. My boyfriend and I have gotten him to the point where his gills have grown back and are finally fluffy.
Although we are now faced with the scariest thing and hope he wil remain a fighter.

Upon waking up yesterday morning, my boyfriend went to check on all of our babes (axies and bettas) to say hello to each one in their own little tanks and he noticed one, our junior, was missing.
He was on the floor in a puddle of water all curled up full od debris. We put him in a fresh tub of dechlorinated water and he stayed lifeless and shrivled. I started to bawl my eyea out and I had to leave for work. After a good 5 minutea of stating and blubbering he flipped onto hia belly and took a gulp of air.
His slime coat is 80% gone or shedding off. His gilla were slicked back to hia head but now they're out and fluffy...but he doesn't move when you try to move him. Every so often he'll be in a different part of the little tub, but that's about it. His back legs look broken almost, but he doesn't look dead to me. Tip of his tail is torn and there's no fungua yet. He is in fridge temp water (we keep 5 gallons of dechlorinatrd water in the fridge at all time just in case. Our bedroom is only 50 degreea because we cut off heat for the tanks and to conserve eneegy. And I live in Wisconsin USA where the temp outside is currently -16 degres and -50 with windchill.

Any ideas tips or tricks? I've read similar threads but its like there axiea a fee responsive. I don think he is dead...I think his limbs may e broken. ... or I'm just keeping false hope.

Try to take some pictures for us (axolotl, limbs, slime coat, tank, etc).

The thing of concern now is opportunistic infections such as fungus. Watch for anything could be developing. Be sure to do 100% water changes daily while your axolotl is in the fridge with declorinated water that is at the same temperature. He's probably going to need to be in there a while if a significant amount of slime coat is gone. He may shed for a while, when he stops you can put him back into his tank.

I wouldn't worry about any broken limbs yet as those can be addressed after he has regained health.

Next you can look into reasons why this happened. Make sure the water quality in his tank is good as this is a reason for an axolotl jumping out. Look into getting a lid for your tank or lowering the water level equal to that of the length of his body.

If you notice his health deteriorating further post an update or contact a vet.

Poor baby!

You could try a tea bath to help sooth his skin. My axolotl was very sick with a bacterial infection a few months ago and I floated Indian Almond Leaves in his water. He didn't get any fungal infection, so I would recommend floating a leaf or two in the water.

Keeping the water clean and cool is probably the best advise you'll get in this situation. Unfortunately it's a case of wait and see what happens. I really hope your little one pulls through,

Also, I've read stories like this in the past of axolotls jumping out of tanks. I didn't want a lid for mine as I use fans in the summer. I got some wire mesh from the local DIY store and cut it to fit the top of the tank. That way I know he can't jump out.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies guys. I hadn't had the heart to come back on with an update.
We lost him the next morning. I was very perplexed at whole ordeal. I think what may have driven him to hop out was another axie in the tank may have nipped his tail. I had a makeshift lid over the top using sheets of plastic, but there was about a 2" gap on either side, and I think that's where he lept out. My main tank is stable and I've never had problems, and I now have a 10g set up for the last little one fully equp with a screen top lid.
Thank you everyone for your responses. It was a very very difficult loss.
