I recently wrote a research paper on axolotls, my main topics were their problems in the wild, what people are doing to build the wild axolotl population, and their regenerative properties and uses in science. If your school has online databases, just search axolotls and you'll find a lot of different articles to give you ideas.

Since you are close to Mexico City I'd do something about habitat loss, invasive species, and efforts to preserve remnant populations. I'd also do something about their abundance in captivity and why they are such good research animals.
