Axolotl conservation status?

Hi everyone
I was wondering if anyone on this platform knows anything about the status of axolotls in the wild. I'm doing a research project and any information would be very much obliged.

The best sources you can find are in Spanish. A recent study at UNAM concluded they cannot return to live in the wild and the only hope for them to avoid extinction are sanctuaries and aquarists.
