My axies are breeding for the first time as of last night. I have done my extensive research and I'm prepared for the babies- that's not my concern. Along with my research, I tried to find out just how long after the female accepts the spermatophores does she actually lay the eggs?
I've read 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours...
Does it really just depend on the female? What have you all learned from your personal experiences?

Thanks,
Jessica :)

It's supposed to be 2 days or so.
But I thought one of mine accepted a sprematophore 6 weeks ago and she still hasn't laid! (and obviously she won't)

I currently have her in with 4 other lotls. If she is to lay her eggs tonight, should I leave her in there? Or move her to a private tank with a breeding sponge (idea I got from willowcat)? My concern is that the other axies will eat some of the eggs before I have a chance to remove them.

The eggs have a layer of slime to help attached them to plats etc, and then a fairly robust outer layer. And TBH it won't matter of a handful get eaten - there are likely to be hundreds of eggs.

But it may make it easier if the eggs are laid in a nursery tank - I missed about 20 eggs when I removed mine from the big tank. I think if I was certain a female was about to lay I'd separate her.

Thanks for the advice :) I just didn't know if moving her would upset her.

I have another newbie question, just from what I have observed.
When a female collects a spermatophore, does she take the entire glob? Or just the white cap? It was whole when I saw it 30 minutes ago but now the white part is almost gone...

A spermatophore is made up of a white blob of sperm on a little jelly-like stalk - the female just takes the blob. Like taking a flower head off a stem!

Well my oldest girl, Furi, has finally began laying her eggs :) I'm so excited! After all the spermies my boy has been dropping around for the last 3 weeks, she finally caught on!!
