Hi Guys!!!

After having my axy a couple of months I thought it would be cool for us to all share the weird and wonderful behaviours our axolotls have.

When I first got my axolotl I was scared that every gill flick, every change in temperature and basically everything was going to lead to him dying. I think it would be cool to have a thread full of behaviours that we see as normal (and hilarious/cute) for others to look at so they can say "hey, he won't die if he zooms around". Plus its fun to see the differences in the different axys.

So, I will start with my guy. He's called Pablo and I'm convinced he's a he because he already seems to have balls. He is very blessed in that department it would seem.
I've had him two months and he has grown about 2 inches and is becoming a very big lad.

In the beginning he wouldn't eat anything I tried. A week went by and he decided he liked blood worm. It's normal for them not to eat when they're settling in, just like any animal. Just keep trying.

Current funny behaviour ; he sulks in his food bowl if its past 9PM and I haven't dropped something in. He will not move from the food bowl until I have fed him. He loves food!!! He's gonna be fat.
Now you guys go and lets discuss **** that we now know is normal and stuff.

One of my wild type axolotls stands up on two feet right infront of me looking like it wants food all of the time.

Mine does too and he's a wild type.

He flicks his gills everytime he sees something he hasn't seen before. Like its made him jump. Quite funny really

Mine love to flick their gills and chase me when they notice me in the room.. Guess they know who's feeding them, haha!
My wild type Gideon had a small hide when I first got him, he used to fit in it perfectly but has since gone through a growth spurt.. He's still convinced he fits in there though. ?

My Wild Type Styxx starts gulping for food every time she sees me walk past the tank.

My Leusistic male Ash sulks for at least a week every time something changes in the tank. He has been at it for three weeks this time, ever since I had to treat him with salt baths for his broken and fungus-y toe. It healed just fine and is growing back, but he is only now coming out when the light is on.

Mine usually positions herself so she's looking at whoever is in the room, standing up with her front feet on the glass, waiting to be fed

Oh man... My kiddos do a lot of funky stuff.

First off, my big boy Ogo will try and breed with anything that moves. He's recently been trying to get it on with his new tank mate... who is also his son.... hhhhggg... Ogo also has a penchant for wedging himself in to spots that are half his size....

My lady Kenway, who has her own tank, is really inquisitive and turns and looks at me whenever I am near her tank. Even if she's just been fed she'll just turn and stare, and I think that's pretty cool.

And finally my little boy Nugget is the most active of my lotls. He's almost a year old now but is a scrappy little fella. He will also stand on his hind legs for hours on end and sometimes he even walks around like that. He'll also get super excited if you wiggle your finger at the surface of the water and he'll shoot up to try and bite you... and then end up rolling around up there as he misses your finger over and over because he is not at all coordinated.

(Pics are wedged Ogo, staring Kenway, and standing Nug. Also, I have no idea why the two are flipped... I blame my phone :/ )

I haven't been on here for weeks because I've started a new job so been real busy. But I love that people have commented on here. I want to start sharing more because I was so nervous of everything he did when I first got him but I soon figured out that most of it is just natural behaviour.

My little guy (he aint so little any more) still hasn't handled the coming up for air. He comes up and then I can guarantee he will nose dive into the floor on his way down.

But I am sure we will all agree that there is one thing that they do that is weirder than anything else. It doesn't happen very often but by god its strange. And that thing is..........

YAWNING!!!! Jesus it is the strangest thing I have ever seen.

I am currently planning a refurb on his tank. Introducing some live plants and hopefully start to breed shrimp for live food. He's about 8.5 inches now already so I think he is big enough now to go hunt his own food lol.

At first, my axolotl would go with flow from the air pump, but then I noticed that it was eating the bubbles haha

What sort of food bowl do you use and what food to do you put in it? Why doesnt the food float away?

But yeah - my Gary (female) likes to watch TV. If the TV is on she goes to that side of the tank and is definitely watching it through the glass on her hind legs.
She sometimes has a mad half hour at night where she swims about like crazy and dive bombs the floor of the tank.
I too, used to (and still do) worry about everything. But most weird behavior is normal or rights itself pretty soon.

My axie Stub got so mad at me because I went away for 2 days and he didn't get his normal diet (lots of variety, lots of meaty foods; he's very spoiled). When I got back and walked into the room to see and feed him, he stomped into the back corner of his tank and just sat there (I think he was mad at me for not being there), I fed him in that spot of the tank, which is super unusual for him...but he wouldn't even look at me. It took him 2 days before he would come back to the front of the tank for his normal routine- he was so mad at me!! He's so weird. I love my little baby :)
