Hi all,

I wonder if any of you had heard about Axolotls having truble because of tanins ?
I'm asking because on the french web a lot of people are saying than tanin can cause serious issues whith Axolotl, (intoxication, skin problem...).
But when i had Axolotl (a few years ago) I had some wood in the tank (i can't make a tank without wood...) and I never experianced any of those...

So i wonder if it's just a "french legend", or if it's based on true stories.

Can any one help me hith this ?

Tannins, or tannic acid, in high concentrations might cause some damaging effects. But I think at low levels, in a well-cycled aquarium, pose no problems to axolotls. As a matter of fact, tannins have a well-documented antibacterial effect, and can be used to treat mild skin ailments.

That's what i always heard/read/experiance but if you told that to those people they'll kill you ;-)
So if no one talk about this kind of issue i'll continue to use wood for my axolots.

Thank's for your answer.

If you're still concerned I've read that mopane wood is safe to use and has no tannins in it :) It's generally an ash colour though
