Hello! I am thinking about keeping my axolotl with malaysian trumpet snails. Even though the snails are tropical, I have kept them in coldwater with success. They don't die and but breed a little slower, so that was fine. I want to use them to aerate the axolotl's sand, and they can be good snack for axolotls. Would that work? If not I'll just use Japanese trapdoor snails instead.

I wouldn't risk the Mts or the trapdoor snails with axolotls because their shells are either pointy or too large and hard to be digested easily. I use bladder snails or common pond snails because they are smaller and are considered soft shell snails.

I'll know soon enough, as they have inadvertantly entered my tank with plants.

Hence why you need to quarantine plants for at least a week before adding them to your tank! I have had 2 types of snail and mayfly larvae in my tanks that hitched a ride in on plants.

Both malaysian trumpet snails and japanese trapdoor snails are unsuitable - pointy shells and large trapdoors are potentially fatal to axies.

My axies seem to take care of any stray pond snails though...
