I went to a pet store today to get some RODI water for my tank. I had been told that they sell axolotls so I asked to see them. I was absolutely horrified by what I saw. In about a ten-gallon tank I saw about 7 axolotls. One was about 6 inches long and looked okay, but the other 6 were about 3 inches and very skinny. All of the little ones were missing at least one limb. Most were missing both of their front feet. The bottom of the tank was brown and covered with poop. I asked the employee if they could move the larger one in a tank by itself since it is clearly eating off of the others. She didn't seem to care at all about the abuse that was going on. I contacted my other trustworthy pet store in hopes of help in rescuing these animals. I should be contacted tomorrow to see if the pet store will be able to rescue them. The pet store that the abuse is going on is Pet-Topia in Kansas City, MO. Who should I contact about this? I want these axolotls saved and in good health.

this is an emergency situation, if you are able i would definitely contact the authorities and attempt to save the animals yourself. the most important thing is to refuse buying them, do not fund stores that participate in this kind of behavior. educate the employees//manager about the problems and insist on taking them for free. if you aren’t able to house all of them long term, id suggest nursing them back to health then giving them away or selling them. keep up updated :’)

That is just a sad part of the pet trade. If you buy them, you might be able to save them but it will also fund for the store to purchase more axolotls. The truth is even if you don't buy them, the stores will always carry more and more as axolotls are popular hit pets that many people would buy anyways.

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
