Hi everyone. I joined this site so I can help my son take care of his axoloti's.

We are trying to determine how to properly cool the 20 gallon tank they are kept in.

I was looking to buy a very small chiller???

Any sugguestions??

How warm is the tank water without the chiller? Anything between 16-20 degrees c is perfect but I wouldn't say a temp of anything less than 22 is catastrophic. If you can maintain temperatures in this range I wouldn't bother with a chiller. Anything nearing or over 25 and you have a problem. A chiller is great for keeping the water cool if you can afford one. If not you can place fans over the water surface and/or use frozen ice bottles as a cheaper alternative. Bottles will need to be in large supply as obviously ice melts more quickly than water freezes.

Are you aware that axolotls are illegal to possess in the state of New Jersey?

you can get an aquarium fan for MUCH MUCH cheaper than getting a chiller. I was having a horrile time keeping my water at an acceptable temperature, I finally got an aquarium fan for like a total of 30 bucks off amazon and it is the BEST purchase ever. Within an hour the water had cooled by 8 degrees or so.

I use cheap clip on fans from Walmart. I think they cost me like $5-$8 each. I put two on an aquarium and can bring the temperature down about five degrees F.
