The tank im cycling for my axie is sitting at 13c just now but my room does get a bit colder through winter. Do you think it would be an idea to get a heater ? if so any recommendations as to which ones would be suitable for a 72 litre tank (19Gallons us ) (15Gallon imp)

Do not worry about it. While it seems on the chilly side, that temp is on the slightly low end of axolotl heaven. You just need to remember it will not need to eat as often. At that temperature, once a week will suffice, if that.

The addition of a heater is asking for trouble. Most of the self heaters even at their lowest settings are too warm for axolotls. If you know the water will get cooler than that, and feel you must use a heater, make sure to buy one that is undersized for the tank. You want to avoid consistent water temperatures over 21C.

I wouldn't recommend a heater. My axie pond goes down around 10C every winter, and the axies have been going strong for 4+ years now.

Johnny is right, there aren't any heaters that will raise the temp from 13 to 16C, for example. The lowest that you can adjust them to is usually 19 or 20C, and I think you are better off leaving it at 13. A cold period is good for them.

Thanks for the the help. will post some pictures soon as tank is nearly ready now

I think you are lucky to have this "problem". I have the opposite problem with my axie tanks being too warm. When I used to work at the I.U. Axolotl Colony in the 90's we did studies with the temps as low as 48 F, with no ill effects.

I had one winter where I was gone for the weekend, and forgot to shut the window to my salamander room. A few of my larval tubs skimmed over with ice. They were fine.

Thanks guys going tomorrow to get my axie theres a big aquatics place near me that have them will post pics up soon as possible
