What exactly is the best way to house an Axie. We have 2 of them and a really big vitraruim (half land half water). I was told they are exactly like a mud puppy but dont change into salamanders. If this is the case then should we just get rid of the land part for more swimming room? Also is sand seriously the best substrate for them? I see so many people with sand for their substrate. And a bit of an OT question... Is there a such thing as "half albino"? We have one that is completely white with blueish eyes and the other is kind of yellow with red eyes. We were told the blueish eyed one is half albino while the red eyed one is complely albino. Thank you for any and all help.

It's actually leucistic. I suppose a 'half albino' is a good description but not entirely true. Albinos have no dark pigment at all resulting in pink eyes and white/yellow colouration. Leuistics tend to have black freckles and black eyes blue isnt unheard of ...in all other animals I think this variation is refered to as lutino I dont know why it's leucistic in axies

I have spent heaps of time and $ trying to answer that question. I now have two axie tanks one 20 gallon with no substrate 12 plants, 8 silk and plastic 4 live, a waterfall filter, two rock caves and a tree stump.

The other is a ten gallon tank with sand, 5 plants, a waterfall filter and two rock caves. I had pebbles about 3-4 cm but after reading how many peoples axie suffer from gravel impaction I changed to sand.

The two in the 20g tank don't have any trouble moving on the bare floor and clening the tank is easy. all three axies seem to be happy in their environments. I have tried to make them as natural as I can but its up to you.

Have alook in the gallery on this site there are some good photos of excellent setups.

Oh and axolotls are believed to be some kind of larval tiger salamander that doesn't morph but does develope lungs.

Have a look at www.axolotl.org

So in short bare floor or sand lots of plants and a few places to hide and if you have two or more axies in the tank enough room for them to get away from eachother

Ok, so sand or large rock is better for them than gravel? I will talk to my mom and dad and tell them then. One more question... Our axies dont really have bright pink gills like all the ones I have seen on here. They were bright at the petstore then when we got them home they went dull. Is this from stress? And will they brighten back up with time? Thank you for any and all help.

Hi,
You don't need the land bit if they are axolotl, if you are sure ( check pics on this site) I would remove it. With regards to flooring I have started of with sand, but as I have had a long spell of the water cycling a while back a fair amount did get sucked up leaving patches of bare tank, I would now be tempted not to add any next time I up grade the tank as it is a lot easier to spot clean ..though if I do add more I'll get lighter coloured sand as a personal preference. I have recently replanted all the living plants into pots with sand as they like to play with the plants I was constantly having to re plant, this has been succesfull over the last 6 weeks. You do need some where for them to hide, I bought from the local aquarium a lovely cave which they can BOTh hide in, but hubby was unusually alert piped up " you said they tend to be solitary so you must have two or three hiding places", so I left the original drain pipe in and on the whole they lurk singley in either one ( how on earth they actuallt manage to turn round in the drain pipe is a mystery to me!).
With regards to the gill colour, my golden ones gills are paler when she is still, maybe asleep or relaxed, when she is in food mode they go redder, with my wild type they seem to stay black. While in the pet store thay may not have been very happy, so may possibly have been redder due to stress or anxiety ( much like me!!).
Hope this helps.

I agree with bellabelloo,my light coloureds gills get redder when hes active and go pale when he is resting. Nothing to worries about its quite natural

Ok, thank you all for the help. I will need to get pictures of them up soon. They are such beautiful creatures.
