So I got my axolotl today:D! He (or she but leaning towards he) is a wild type and he's about 1.5" or so, in my 10gallon at the moment. He's very active and he's so fun to watch :) I wanted to name him Jager but my family wanted Axel, so Axel it it :) Hope all goes well with him :) He ate when I fed him some bloodworms earlier, reminded me of a blackhole, sucking everything up! :p So happy I got him

Congratulations!

You wont be able to sex him or her until 18 months old. When they are that size they eat like crazy... Actually they always eat like crazy lol. I see that your tank is not fully covered in sand, when feeding try to put the food where there is less sand and mostly glass, when they are that size sand can pose the same threat as gravel.

Best of luck with your new Axolotl you and your family will love him or her:happy:

That's an odd looking axolotl. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses.

Neat coloration!

But to me, after seeing pics of juvenile axies vs tiger salamanders, it looks more like a tiger salamander juvie.

Either way, very cute! :D

Thats just super cute... So delicate and precious ♡

Hi,
I got a Axolotl at the weekend, am told he/she is about 2 years old. Guess what I named him, yes Axel.
I too am new to keeping these and am so glad I found this forum ( if I can work out how to use correctly) lol, hope I make a better keeper than computer user, again lol.
Good luck with your little one.

I'm sure you'll be an excellent axolotl keeper :) This is my first one too, and I love this forum! Axel seems a popular name xD what type is yours?

Also Axel is doing fine, swimming all over the place, he sure is active! and eating just fine, I will post a video later :) He does seem really unique, I planned on just a leucistic but once I saw this little guy I had to have him :) He sure is a conversation starter. At school I tell everyone about my new pet and everyone's like "You have an axo-what?" Lol and then of course I pull out my phone and show everyone my baby:p

Hey everyone, just want a little advice. Its 55 - 60 celcius in my Salamanders tank. Hes curled up and tyring ti bury himself, Im assuming hes too cold. I was wondering if he would benefit from a heated rock cave (since he LOVES his cave) that I could set on low? I NEVER see him curled up and trying to bury himself unless his tank sits at 63 degrees celcius or lower. So I am assuming hes a little uncomfortable.

He also seems a little sluggish, again, assuming hes cold. Having heating trouble with the new house right now. What do we think? Was thinking of grabbing this for him since its got very low, medium, and higher medium heat settings that exude heat downward inside the rock cave but ALSO exudes it UPWARDS outside of the rock cave, effectively keeping the tank itself a little warm. Seems like it miiiight be a little small for him though, my guy is about 7 inches from tip of his nose tothe tip of his tail.
