Not again!!!

I only have about 20 at this stage. If I get less than 100 during the course of today, I'll raise em. If more, they've gotta go.

I remember reading at axolotl.org about heat seeming to make axy babies grow faster. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with adding a heater to the hatchlings water to encourage growth?

Oooooh No! You poor thing!
I remember one person using a heater and killing off all her eggs. But I would assume that was due to too high temps. I also remember reading a post by someone who used this method successfully. If you could raise the water to 18 - 20C the eggs should be ok, and will hatch faster (maybe could go higher, I am unsure).
Personally I found that the 2 weeks it took my eggs to hatch was barely enough time to get everything organised. (I think that was at about 16 -17 degrees C)

Yeah, organisation is important but it's only been about 3 months since i sold off the last batch of juvies!!! So i've already got everything I need.

I just may try the heater-speed-up method - it was something like 1 deg C overnight last night and I've just noticed heaps of spermatophores in the tank. I'm scared now. Lucky it's semester break.

oo I may get a couple of your juveniles (if you do chose to raise them)

Well, were well past 100 now and counting.

Here's 2 pics of the deed being done!

Famous last words eh.

Nathan, my eggs are half black and half white - I have no idea what this means.

First few hundred eggs have been removed to the freezer.
Anyone have any idea how long I have to keep them in there for before they're inactive?

And - she's still laying this afternoon.
What a marathon.

On the egg color question:

lack of pigment - this indicates that the mother was albino. Normal eggs are dark brown (there is a picture of two at the top of this page). An albino mother will lay white, pigmentless eggs. If the offspring are not albino, pigment will appear during embryo development.

Anne-Marie - I kept the eggs in the deep freeze for two days (frozen solid). I am not sure how long they need to be in there to officially stop development.

Hi There. 7 weeks ago I had axolotl eggs. I put a heater in the tank set at 20 degrees celius. My eggs hatched exactly 1 week later. I keep my babies at this temp. Now they are six weeks old and the biggest one is 5 1/2 cm. I do believe the temp is the way to go. Hope this helps.

Hi Stacy. I suppose you could speed up eggs hatching by heating the tank. Normally most people don't recommend using a heater at all with axolotls. The colder the water is the better they do. With a heater their is always a chance of a malfunction and getting to warm.

Stacy - Are you sure it was 7 days? At 20C it should of taken closer to 14 days.

This series of photos shows development at 20C

I agree with Michael on the heater. What is the temperature of your water without using a heater?

Thanks all. Re: the water heat thing, I definitely read on axolotl.org that John had heated water and felt that this sped up development. This is a moot point now because I'm not keeping them anyway.

Hi Cynthia, yes it was 7 days. Just had another lot of eggs hatch yesterday. 7 days to the day.
