So as you may have seen I've got two new axolotls about 4 months and about 2 inches. At this stage/length what's the lowest temperature they can tolerate for a few days? I have a spare fridge in the garage with some food in there (will it contaminate the water?)

I'm asking this because I don't have a fan for the babies tank, and on usual days of 25 degrees I keep the water at about 17 degrees with ice bottles. However tomorrow is supposed to hit 35 degrees, followed by 4-5 consecutive days over 30 degrees.

Suggestions?

The only real solution to extended hot weather is a chiller.

Or move somewhere cooler, but I guess that's even more expensive than a chiller....!

It was 40 here in central Vic today; Chernobyl's tank was 22c when I left for work. Came home at lunch with some bags of ice (tank was 26c) , put him in a plastic tub, and the tub itself in an ice bath in a cooler box (kept him in the stable 26c water so he'd cool slowly with the water and not get shocked).
Another Aussie in a fb group I'm in put her lotls in an esky to keep them cool enough.

I have a great chiller set up - which is useless until that tank is cycled :/

Chillers are a long way off my budget right now as a part time worker studying full time! I've gone three successful years without a chiller, not 1 fungus caused by a hotter than usual tank hopefully it goes 4 years successful. The big tank I have no problem keeping cool because of the fan and big 3L ice bottles. However the small tank can not accommodate the fan or large ice bottles as it cools the water down way too quickly. And I can't put them in the big tank or they'll end up as dinner.

So back to my original question - what's the lowest temperature a very small axolotl can handle?

Ahh nex my feelings go out to you! We had a 43 degree day last summer and it was horrible! I might try the esky idea if my fridge is too cold. How much did you pay for your chiller?
