This is my girl Atzi, only got her on the 11th August, she's about 3 years old.
I'll be changing out her stones to some diggable sand soon so she can dig properly.

I'm glad that you've decided to use sand rather than gravel or stones....axies can accidentaly swallow stones/gravel which can lead to fatalities....

Make sure the sand that you get is suitable for freshwater aquariums (probably silica-based) rather than the sand pet-shops sell as 'reptile sand' or the like.
When you get the sand it has to be WELL rinsed, putting the sand in a bucket and sticking a hose-pipe into the middle of it, aggitating/stirring it until the water runs clear, then draining it and soaking it in treated water . Remove any pieces of gravel that might be in the sand.

Axolotls aren't really known for 'digging' into sand (or any other substrate) but I'm sure they'll appreciate the sand, and it'll be easier to clean than rocks, for example.

You say this, but right now as we speak my axie will either be swimming or digging. He digs all the time, especially around the edges of the tank or just making mounds.

Thats another reason i love sand, because it does give them an additional source of entertainment, in digging.

I've never seen an axie dig. That is very cool. I hope mine do it some day in their new future tank!

Atzi's tank is now 2 foot long x 1 foot deep x 16 inches high, but I've only filled to about 1 foot high. The stones she has in at the moment are alot bigger then her head, she moves them around to get to her food.
I am feeding her frozen bloodworm, does anyone have any suggestions on a better diet for her, she does seem to be a little skinny when looking down from above.

My axies will dig out sand in the corners of their tank and than sleep in the hole in one big pile I think they're siblings. Always want to be with each other.

I have one who likes to try and dig out the front right corner of the tank doesn't get him very far though there is a nice big, well established sword plant off to the side and he can't get through it's roots :rofl: doesn't stop him trying though. The other one prefers to sit up in the plants near the top of the tank, they are all so different.

both my axies move the gravel(it is smaller than 1mm) mainly in the corners of the tank. I think they are doing it when they have their late night parties. The best food is a nice big, fat, wiggly earthworm.

Atzi likes the back corner of her tank, she's banked all the sand so she has a dip to lie in. If I try to move it back she sulks and digs it all out again, so I tend to leave it be.
She always lets me know when she's hungry by following me as I walk in front of her tank.
I am thinking of getting her a friend, but won't be putting them together until I know it won't be eaten, she's one greedy girl. :rofl:

Mine sulk after a water change you'd think they would be happy to have cleaner water but nope, they just sulk for a couple of days and don't want to talk to me :rofl:

Heres a better photo of them both together, the separation lasted for a whole 24 hours. Atzi decided that she was going to play with Atl, whether I liked it or not, and jumped over the partition. So to stop the sulking I have just left them together, Atzi now protects Atl from the camera and tried to bite me when I moved them earlier for a water change.

i have had 2 different sized axies together for awhile now and they are fine just dont let them get hungry and big one shouldnt eat little one! my little one took a little nip out of bigger ones tail but bigger one hasnt touched smaller one, smaller one likes to lay on top of other one and there usually always together

They look very cute together indeed. And they look like they could get into Laurel and Hardy-esque shenanigans any moment I sure hope that the big one doesn't decide to take a tasty snack sometime

They are both very well fed, so I doubt Atzi would bother trying to catch Atl.
They've been together for over a week now and the only thing Atzi got upset about is a water change and because I moved the sand back that she dug out.
