Hello!

I have my hedgehogs entered into a Christmas photo contest, and I would appreciate it if my fellow Caudata members would help a newt enthusiast out. If you could vote for 62, Winston Churchill, or 63, Pepper, I'd very much appreciate it. If we win, my hedgehogs will be very happy with a new wheel.

Christmas Contest 2012 - Carolina Storm Hedgehogs

Thanks a lot!

What lush little Hogs! My brother has a pygmy hedgehog called Tickle, I will forward your request to him and see if he can get his friends to vote too.

Good Luck :D

Could you please pop one in the post & send it to me here in Australia :)
(Joking.... But not! ;) )

I'm obsessed with hedgehogs & have collected stuffed toy hedgehogs since I was a kid (& we don't even have them here!) I wish we could keep them as pets here - but due to customs they're not allowed :(

Such gorgeous creatures <3

Do they live in New Zealand or any of the pacific islands? They are really good swimmers so maybe you could 'happen' upon one on the beach that obviously would be exhausted after it's epic swim from a neighbouring country and need lots of care and attention (at least that's the version you'd give customs or failing that tell them it's a 'spiny rat' ;))

Thanks for the help! Right now Winston is behind. The top has something like 47 votes, and he has 9. I'm hoping to get some more publicity through some facebook and tumblr posts. We're at least looking to be in the top twenty so far. But Winston has more votes than Pepper - I'm hoping to get both into the top twenty :)

Sorry, I don't think I'll be able to sneakily send them to you. Unless you can explain how animals from Africa somehow got to Australia...

Here in Australia we have an egg laying mammal that is called an....

"Echidna" (E-Kid-Na)

They're amazing creatures but quite a lot larger than an African Pigmy Hedgehog - I think the cutest thing is a baby Echidna is called a 'Puggle' :D

The Echidna (or affectionately known as the Spiny Anteater) is a primitive mammal. It lives in both Australia and New Guinea.

It is a solitary animal that burrows. When it is attacked, the echidna will burrow into the ground or curl itself into a ball using its spines as a method of defence against the predator. The echidna's spines cover the top of its body. Echidna's have long sharp claws on their feet, and are approximately 35-50 cms long with a 10cm long tail. Their nose is very sensitive, they use this to find food, then they use their long sticky tongue to catch ants, worms and other such insects. Echidna's weigh on average between 2 to 7 kilograms.

Female echidna's lay a single egg in their pouch. After ten days, the egg hatches and a puggle (baby echidna) is born. They are born blind and hairless, and consume milk from a gland within the pouch. After an average of four weeks, the puggle develops sharp spines, and must leave the pouch.

I made an echidna out of cardboard once for a friend. A few years back I had this crazy hobby of building animal replicas out of recycled cardboard. My echidna was probably the best work.

I had a hedgehog once., I voted in honor of ol' Piglet.

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
