Asian plants

Hey all
I belong to those persons, who can´t see enclosures, including e.g. asian newts, with south american plants in it.So i try to do my best, to get, at least almost, fitting plants to get nice tanks.
Currently, i grow Ficus pumilum, oak-leaf Ficus, Scindapsus sp., Selaginella uncinata and Java-Moss. My biggest problem is to find waterplants that do well in quite "dark" tanks and can grow in water, that´s only up to approx. 15 cm high.
Of course, i do look for east-asian ones, that can do temperatures, my newts need in winter.
If you got an idea,
please tell me about it!
Very nice would be something to grow on the surface!

Hi Philipp,
Plants of the genus Cryptocoryne are Asian water plants (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia) and grow in fairly low light conditions. They will also grow partially emersed in shallow water. I don't know how well they will grow in cooler water has I have them in my tropical fish aquariums. Some of the hardier species that I have grown include C. wendtii, C. balansae, C. affinis. Hope this helps.

I have had a good experience with the Java Fern (Microsorium pteropus), it can grow on lavic-rocks or on woods, is vey resistent, does not need much light and it's easy to breed (little new plants grow on older leavesnd when they are big enough you can cut them..so you hava new plants!)
just my two (Euro) cents ;-)

Thanks to you
Yes, heard about the Genus you mentioned, Duncan.
Seems to be easier for fish-lovers, to find solutions,.....;-)
Those are my favourites so far, cause i heard of, especially vietnamese species, that have to be quite hard to destroy, even at lower temperatures,...
Leo:Your money´s speaking, or what?;-)
Greets,
Philipp
