Hi everyone, I've been thinking about changing my substrate from sand to something else to make cleaning up a little easier. I've seen some pictures of people with artificial turf on their tank bottoms and I searched and found a thread where someone said they use it and it works great. I'm just a little worried about possible chemicals in the turf and degradation. Can anyone link me to where to buy some high quality stuff? Thanks in advance!

Artificial... turf? Like... astroturf? Like on indoor soccer fields? I'm soooo confused. Is that what you're talking about?

I would also worry about chemicals used in manufacturing and actually about it being a little sharp... (laying down on it isn't all that fun)

But I'm curious as to what others think... link to the thread where someone used it? I'm genuinely curious now, though personally I'd never go sticking that in my tank...

Yes, it's been done before without too many issues - I think they use the type of fake grass matting that grocers use rather than football pitch astroturf because it's softer.

Personally I have an acrylic plate with sand embedded in silicone - as easy to clean as bare bottom, but with texture for axie feet and the look of sand.

You make it haha, some watersafe plastic that same size as the floor of your tank, and some aquarium safe silicone.
You silicone a layer of sand to the plastic let it dry and pop it in your tank :D

Ace like the sound of that!!! Might have to get some made as i feel my plain glass just looks bare! It sounds like something my hubby can do a good job of :)

I posted about my siliconed-down sand base here with photos. I've had it over 6 months and haven't had to patch bare bits yet, despite monthly scrubbings.

The rug is somewhat soft to the touch. However it runs pretty easy on the edges where cut. perhaps you could find a solution for that.
