I read somewhere that wild type axolotls tend to be a little more aggressive towards their tank mates - especially if they're an abnormal color morph, such as leucistic or albino....

Has anyone experienced this in their tanks?

I'm getting a new tank soon, which I'd like to move my axolotls into after I've cycled it. - it's one of those nice octagonal coffee table aquariums. About 29 gallons. I was considering getting a third axolotl down the line and My boyfriend is a big fan of wild type and melanoid morphs, and either would make a nice contrast to my other two... But I certainly don't want to bring in anything aggressive.

I've the impression aggression is not too much of a problem with adult axolotls, in mixed batches of juveniles the wild types do seem to bite bits off others far more commonly than the other way round.

Hello

I have one wild type axie (Pablo) and one leucistic (Chico) both are about 12 cm so theyre still juveniles and the wild type is definately more boystrous and slightly "aggressive" towards the leucistic, especially when there is food involved! If Chico has any food then Pablo will come over and nip at his tail which was obviously stressing Chico out and as a result he wasnt eating properly...

So now I separate them during feeding and created lots more hides and this has had a great result! Chico is eating lots and I havent seen any aggression between them at all recently :D they actually lie on top of each other a lot of the time...

Anyways, if you do it properly then you should be fine!

Ciao :p

I have a wild, leucistic & a golden albino and I have had no problems with my wild and I got them all when they were about 4 inches long

Ive got a hench foot long melanoid and a young 8in golden albino together and the melanoid seems to be the most gentle out of the two, I dont think you will have too much of a problem with aggression towards each other but as you know axies are pretty aggressive feeders and will snap at anything that moves if food is involved this is where the accidents can happen but it would be just an accident, feeding at separate ends of tank will help avoid this. I wouldnt worry bout getting a wild type axie I think you will have just as much chance of agression from an albino is all down to the individual axies, just like us humans.

I actually don't have that problem. They're all pretty much the same. Only my wildtypes are hiding more than the lighter ones.

My wild type is more aggressive than my golden albino. She nips at him a lot and he often has a missing tail tip or gill frond tip missing.

My wild type Sek is the most sensitive, kind wild type I have ever owned. Sometimes Alonzo thinks everything is edible and my other wild type Gallifrey is also not agressive.

Thanks everyone. I'm not going to make any decisions until the tank gets here and I can actually see the dimensions and decide whether it will comfortably accommodate more than two before I really consider getting a third. But if I do, it'll very likely be a darker morph. if there are any issues, I have accommodations for separation.

I appreciate the input.
