So I ordered these rocks online thinking that they would be smaller, but now looking at them in the tank I am not sure if they will be a problem for my juvie (not in there yet, don't worry - and yes i will be removing the gravel)

Thoughts on this? Im thinking they might be hard to clean around also and that food could get lost in them (unless I use a feeding dish). Should I just leave a few and get more of those blue marble-ish gems? This is my first time setting up an axolotl tank so any tips appreciated!

edit: not sure why the pic is upside down and can't figure out how to flip it o.0

For the size your juvie is I'd keep it simple.. Don't make too much work ;)

Consider pulling out the rocks & all the other stuff - (don't order more blue marbles things) and leave bare bottomed it is the easiest to maintain & as long as you provide some live plants (ones on driftwood are terrific) & a hide like a log or a cave or the driftwood can double as a hide.

Here's a look at a little tank I set up for some juvies.

It's beside my other tank so you can see the plain sand & java fern in the background :) have a look at some of my other pics in posts - I've just bought a few cheap aromatherapy oil burners & they make great hideouts for little ones ImageUploadedByTapatalk1359237814.300922.jpg

Hi Nikki, how big are your juvie's here? I have two little ones that I'm keeping separate (even though the breeder had them together). I'd rather keep them together if it's safe to do so....when I watched them together, they seemed to be fine...but I don't want to take any risks. If I make them some hides like you have in these pictures, do you think they'd be okay to put in a 10 gallon tank? They're about 2.5 inches long right now (4 months). Thank you! Sharon

Oh wow... my 6 juvies are 4-4.5" and they're only 10.5 weeks xD

All that aside, I think there is no way to be 100% safe with axolotls being housed together - no matter the age. All it takes is poor vision (which they have) and a misjudged call on whether or not an arm/leg/tail is a mis-envisioned, nice, tasty snack. You will be taking a risk no matter when you put them together. Just make sure that they're well fed to lessen the chances :) Besides, it sounds like they're the same size, and at that age they should be past the cannibalistic stage.

Edit: At that size, a 10g tank gives each tons of roaming/hiding space - just keep in mind that if they decide to grow quickly, that will change, fast, and you should upgrade them to a bigger tank when that time comes.
