if not what would be good repolacments?
 
Those are fine. Just keep in mind that aloe will add to your bioload, so if your tank is heavily stocked, you could have ammonia problems. Also, use as directed; you don't need extra.

That filter will also need to be baffled in some way. HOB filters tend to disturb the water quite a bit.
 
Hi, I use API stress coat + and its great, plus you only have to use a tiny bit so the bottle lasts ages! :grin:

what wold be a good idea for buffering the filter?
would putting moss balls in the opening work?
 
I dont think moss balls would work. How would you secure them? A lot of people use sponges, lots of plants, even soda bottles with holes drilled in it. Be creative!
 
I used shower puff balls (new) & attached above the waterfall with a suction cup hook - breaks the flow perfectly ;)

This tank has 2 filters running & both outlets have shower puffs in flow path.
Top right - white puff in front of hob filter waterfall.
Top left - green puff below overhead filter duckbill outlet.
