I was just wondering if frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp were a good food to give to my newts. I know live is better, but are these two good choices?

Trisha

When the foods are frozen they lose some of the nutritional values, but frozen are better than freeze dried.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think they should be ok as part of a varied diet. From what I understand nightcrawlers (earthworms) are generally considered the backbone of a decent diet.

Here is a good article on food for caudates. There's also a few other pages on Caudata Culture about foods etc.

Hope this helps :)

iMash is correct in saying that those are good occasional choices as part of a varied diet. As stated previously, earthworms make the best staple by far.

Thank you for your help. I have been feeding pellet food for a long time and they were eating it well, until recently. They used to go after it like crazy as soon as it was in the tank, but now they wait a long time, so I decided to get some frozen food. I wasn't going to use it as their staple diet though.
So I guess I just cut up the earthworm and put it in their tank?
Thanks again,
Trisha.

Yep. Cut them up or feed them whole if they are not too big. They are the absolute best food.

I had no idea that earthworms were a great food choice for newts. I have had my CFB for almost 6 yrs and my 2 Rough Skinned newts for almost 2yrs and never fed them earthworms or any live food for that matter. I hope they like them.

just to add a bit which kind of "earthworms" are best? ie dew worms, nightcrawlers etc

All "earthworms" are pretty much the same. Any species from the genera Eisenia, Dendrobaena or Lumbricus, which are the most common, are perfectly good.

Hey, thanks for your replies. I was looking for something to feed my salamander and this really helped!
