We went to our local exotic pet shop today to get some snake food (frozen) and noticed that they had attempted to breed axolotls. They had two adult ones in one tank (with a couple dozen eggs they were trying to hatch sectioned off) and in another tank they had a bunch of juveniles that they got somehow. We have a fully grown axolotl (10.5" at our last measuring), but we've been thinking of getting a second one for some time.
The pet shop was keeping the axolotls in warm-ish water (I would guess around 23C) and one of them has an awful red blotch on one side. We feel an urge to rescue them, though we'd have to section off our axolotl tank since they're way too small to be cohabited with our big one. Before we buy though: Could someone tell us if these are actually axolotls or just very young other salamanders (I hear tiger salamanders are easily mis-identified as axolotls)?
