Are buying Kaiser Newts Illegal?

I was looking online and this website has kaiser newts for 160...not including shipping...are they even legal to buy and is that too expensive?

I could be wrong, but I think that every state has its own regulations. I know that here in Texas the answer is no, it is not illegal. Where you life I am not sure.

I would never pay $160 for a Kaiseri and have bought them A LOT cheaper than that before.

N. kaiseri are now considered CITES I, and accordingly, interstate shipping is now regulated.

Actually buying captive bred kaiseri without CITES certificates would be illegal in any other country since they are Appendix I animals. The US has taken it upon itself to down grade captive bred kaiseri to Appendix II. So it seems not everybody has to stick to the rules, which make a mockery of the Appendix I listing in my opinion.

European prices are around £25-35 per newt ($40-60).

i keep looking at this website,,, and they have animal classifieds..and they have mostly salamanders but they have kaisers..one guy had them for 160 and someone just put another add for 100...wish i knew where else to look for in the US. so from 40-60 in UK ...should that be the same in the US or be more?

What you also have to note is that the $160 ones you see are breedable adults. They can easily go for more than three times the price of a juvenile due to demand. Most breeders only offer juveniles, which in turn inflates the price of adults since they can produce more without taking years to mature.

I know a member here currently has hundreds and was planning on selling them for cheap. I haven't seen him post recently, so you might have to contact him for availability if you really want to score the best price.
