I have a 29 gallon tall aquarium. Is this adequate for a pair of axolotls? I would like to get a planted tank started, and have it running for a while before purchasing.

I am thinking I would be buying from someone on this website. Any advice for a newbie? If this tank is not adequate I will think of something else, but I am drawn to the Axolotls! Very unique little creatures!

Thanks for any help!

Axolotls are for most everyone. I had/have live plants in my aquarium. Beware, Axolotls tend to dig them up, I've witnessed them eating plants on occasions. If you don't mind replacing your plants once in a while I say go for it.Keep in mind the axolotls like their habitat to be dark, if your plants need 'a lotl' of light it might not work out.

Two in a 29 gallon high would be o.k. A long tank would be better than a high. The recommended size is at least 10 gallons per adult axolotl. Axolotls spend most of their time on the bottom of the tank. For a high you can put some ornaments, wood, fake or real plants high up for the axolotls to hang out in.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. My only concern would be how to plan on keeping the temperature steady in the summer. Axies can get very sick, very quickly in temps above 70*F. If you have AC you should be fine, but if not you may want to start looking at chillers or another alternative.

i agree with thedoyel on the chiller idea, if i had a full time job it would be a nightmare to keep the tank at an acceptable temperature level. Saying that though, keeping the tank out of the sun and in a cooler room are good ways to keep the tank chilly naturally. Just buy a thermometer and check your readings daily.
