I am a first time axi owner and have a ten gallon tank, equipped with a Aqueon QuietFlow filter 10 100 GPH. I'm worried that it might create too strong a current. I know of another axi owner who uses the 20 model for his 20 gallon tank, but I'm a rather paranoid pet owner and I worry about creating too much stress.

That may be a tad bit too much flow, good thing its a hob filter though. I used a water bottle cut in half to divert the flow when I kept my axolotls in my ten gallon tank. My hob filter was rated for a 20 gallon fish tank, and was on a ten gallon. My axolotls didn't seem too bothered by it with the water bottle diverting the flow. If your axolotls seem like they're being extremely stressed out, and the water parameters are fine, you may want to think about getting a sponge filter, but I'd test it out first.

I tried two different filters, not this brand though, and they stressed mine out. They too were filtering 100 GPH. The first was for up to 20 gallons, and the second was suitable for up to 10 gal. She is in a 10 gallon tank and ill be damned if I didn't try everything to slow down the flow. I tried the half bottle, and I even taped plastic grass in front of the output as well (tape out of water and on filter, obviously). It just stressed her out too much, but I guess you won't know until you try. I've found her to be pretty relaxed and patient with things, but she was pissed with that lol.

I went the sponge filter route though and I couldn't be happier with the numerous things it does. The bubbles released at the top give her a Jacuzzi as well (which from the looks of a lot of people's posts here, their axies love it too)

I usually decide by looking at the gills. If your axies gills are sweying or moving from wate current at all, it is too strong. Solace is right, sponge filters are great
