Aquarium setup - rocks?

I've noticed in several pictures people submit that there are no rocks at the bottom of your tanks. I guess this does make cleaning easier, but would it not create a problem with stress as the newts would have nothing to grasp? If there is no danger by having an empty bottom, I'm tempted to remove the rocks from my tank to make feeding and cleaning easier.

I have had both gravel and no-gravel setups and I don't think it matters much to the newts. At least I can say there are no obvious signs of stress when there are no rocks. I now use either no-gravel or partial-gravel setups. Here are some links to some discussions on this topic:
