so i have ten green frog tadpoles in a 3/4 full ten gallon with a filter and some plants. anyway i put aquarium salt in with my fish and i was wondering if it was ok or beneficial to put it in with the tadpoles. what about salamander larvae? thanks!

This issue was recently raised in this thread:

Some people do use it, and it may be beneficial. Unfortunately, that's the best answer I have at this point. Some feel that adding salt to fish tanks is a myth:

It is worth noting that professionals who raise tadpoles and larvae in zoos and professional breeding facilities usually do use some form of weak salt solution. However, it's more complicated than simply adding aquarium salt. See:
http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/salt.shtml
I also have another article in the works, which will be about how to mix your own "complex" salt solution for raising larvae. Ordinary "aquarium salt" is mostly just sodium chloride. It does not provide the other essential ions that professionals use for raising tads/larvae.

I'm going to move this thread to the General Discussion section of the forum, as I think it is of general interest, and not just a frog-related issue.

ok so ill add some salt. thanks for the reply and those interesting threads!
and yes the move makes sense! :)

Dear All, I would appreciate some help identifying P. waltl disease and treatment. We received newts from Europe early November and a few maybe 3/70 had what it looked like lesions under the legs- at that time we thought maybe it was the stress of travel- now we think they probably had "red leg syndrome" (see picture). However a few weeks later other newts started to develop skin lesions (picture enclosed). The sender recommended to use sulfamerazine and we have treated them 2x and we are not sure they are all recovering. Does anyone have any experience with P. waltl diseases and could give some input on this? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
