Hi. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the Hagen Aqua Clear Power Filters. I just bought one for a 20 gallon and it came with 3 kinds of filteration, a sponge thingy, a carbon filter, and a biomax which looks like white rocks. When the water falls, it sometimes carries some particles of the biomax "rocks" and rests at the bottom of the tank.

I was wondering if anyone knows if these biomax particles are toxic or will hurt the axolotls if they were ingested. I did clean up the particles I saw.

I'd appreciate any help, thanks!

The Biomax is porous ceramic media meant to house beneficial bacteria for biological filtration. I'm sure it's inert, but I probably wouldn't want any animal to ingest any of it, so I would keep removing pieces that you see.

Whenever I get a new Aquaclear, I usually rinse off the Biomax and carbon bags before using them to make sure none of settled dust makes it's way into my aquarium. Give that a try to get rid of any other weakened pieces.

If you're still having trouble, replace the Biomax with new ceramic media from the pet store. You probably got a bag that went through a rough transit.

Good choice with the Aquaclear though, they're my favorite Hang On Back style power filter.

Hi,

normally it´s no need to use the carbon filter. It´s only to eliminate toxine, like chemicals (medicine) and 6 weeks after working it has to be removed, otherwise the toxine could be washed out again.
