Hi all,

One of my 3 noto's is about to go aquatic and based on many ideas gathered from reading the forum I'm planning on building an aqua terrarium for them as shown in the sketch.

Do you think it is OK to keep the younger noto's in such a tank? What if they can't get out of the water?

Please let me know your feedback!

Thanks,

Tim

You might want to reconsider the type of filter. The hang-on-back filter is difficult to seal against escape, and it is not possible to use them in shallow water; they work best in a full or nearly-full tank. Are you absolutely committed to having a waterfall feature?

No, the waterfall isn't needed. It was added only to interrupt the flow enough so as to not disrupt the water much. Also I completely forgot about the escape route!!

What other type of filter do you suggest?

Hello Tim,
There are a few small canister style filters available that may suit this application. I use a Zoo Med 501 filter. It is pretty easy to modify a lid to fit the intake and out flow tubes for this style of filter. As an added bonus it comes with a pre-drilled "rain tube". I am also planning on getting a second one of these for the tank I am currently working on.

I made a filter myselves, under the gravel layer, and used a waterfall at the same outlet as well

A simple air stone in a length of PVC pipe cut to length provides a very nice escape resistant means to operate a waterfall with no moving parts to hurt your pets or grind up live foods. Merely glue the pipe to the back of the tank and build the waterfall around it. Leave the top and bottom of the pipe open. Make sure the bottom of the pipe is at least 25mm below the surface of the water. Insert the air stone and it's hose down the PVC and turn the air pump on. This creates a siphon like effect which moves the water up the pipe and over your waterfall. This is a very easy, cheap method. It is also very easy to clean with a bottle brush. By going this route you never have to tear down your tank if a filter pump goes bad or gets clogged up.

Brilliant, simple idea, Johnny, thank you.

I have been struggling with making a waterfall in my treefrogs tank, I have a small pump in 3 inches of water, but it'll only pump the water about 10 inches high. I'll have to see if I can rearrange the tank to incorporate a pipe and airstone instead.
